You can customise your character’s appearance, but I didn’t spend a whole lot of time looking through all the options. I went for the Knight – I like to get up close and personal in battle and his shield and balanced stats would certainly get me out of a few sticky situations. You could play as the strength focused Warrior, the magically inclined Sorcerer or if you’re feeling particularly brave the ill-equipped and weakened Deprived. There are ten different classes to choose from, each coming with varying stats and equipment. I’ve never been one to properly understand the lore of Dark Souls games, but I kind of gathered that you need to return the Lords of Cinder to their thrones to protect the ever-present fire? Maybe?Īfter the opening you get to create your character. After playing through the beast that was Bloodborne I’d been eagerly awaiting something new from the team at From Software, so what better than the supposed ‘final entry’ in the Dark Souls franchise?Īhead of Dark Souls III’s launch on April 12 th I had the opportunity to try out the first few hours of the game, starting with the opening introduction all the way to the epic battle with the third boss of the game, the Curse-Rotted Greatwood.ĭark Souls III begins with an awesome CGI cutscene (you can actually view it through this link) that tells of the main enemies of this entry – the Lords of Cinder. Sure, the information got leaked a little early, but when I saw that initial reveal trailer I was pumped. It’s hard to put into words the joy I felt when Dark Souls III was announced at E3 last year. It really is just a pleasure to play through the game – even if the difficulty can have you smashing your controller in fits of rage… It’s no surprise really, what with the excellent combat mechanics, grotesque boss encounters and stunning world to explore. Ever since playing through the tutorial in Demon’s Souls (it counts!) all the way to the end of the epic ‘Crown of the Ivory King’ DLC for Dark Souls II, I’ve found myself deeply engrossed in the franchise. Should she attempt a three-hit attack with her blade, wait patiently for the last attack before you strike back.I’m a big fan of Dark Souls. You need to get the timing down, because dodging prematurely is a bad idea. When you see these rays of light moving in your direction, quickly dodge out of harm’s way a few times. The Hunter’s primary strike, though, is a light beam attack.

You should be able to kill her before she has a chance to exit this location.ĭuring this battle, the hunter attempts to hit you with a Threaded Cane, a weird mist that temporarily stuns your character and a tentacle attack.

If that happens, attack until your hunter almost runs out of stamina, then dodge to avoid her attacks and repeat the process. Conversely, you have a chance to make this enemy fit through one of the narrow areas at the top. When the Hunter notices your character, go all the way down the steps so you have even more space to maneuver. Now go into the door on the right and you’ll see some steps and a Hunter. Interact with the lever near the gate and you’ll unlock a shortcut. Dispose of it and then pick up five Sedatives from a nearby dead person these items cure frenzy, which comes in handy if you take damage from a Tree Mutant’s jumping attack.įrom here, turn around and go left into a new area. From here, go to the furthest end of the area to tangle with a Tree Mutant. Now turn around and go left to find a body holding Great One’s Wisdom, which lets your Hunter gain some Insight. Stomp the bug creature into oblivion and look at the stairs. Bloodborne tip, stunning a Giant Insect Mutant is difficult and not worth the effort. This can be problematic because the Giant Insect Mutant will attempt to move around to see your character, but at least on the positive side, it cannot strike back unless you’re in front or to the side.

Ideally you should stay as close as possible, get behind these adversaries and begin attacking. From up close they attempt to grab your hunter or slice him. From range they unleash two fireballs that will eliminate roughly half of your health bar. Pick up the Madman’s Knowledge and then look ahead to see a Giant Insect Mutant, one of the more difficult creatures you’re about to face. Kill the Tree Mutants and then go over to the body near the railing.
